If you are going to be your own renowned 1948 Berlin Chocolate Bomber to the cheers and joy of the children, you may start with coal and chocolate.The airman at the gate waiting for his aircraft to be refuelled had more than coal on his mind as he pondered. That wonderful man had an inspiration as from God. He almost got himself in so much trouble with his idea. Gather airmen's hankies, their chocolate rations, and bomb the kids near the coal drop.
His behavior, against and under orders to cut it out or there was going to be a crash for heavens sake, coal not games. He rightfully made history. Have you ever considered how this caused the hearts of every human soul in Berlin to feel Ich Bein Ein Amerikanner? How do you like to have that come back at you, America? Whether they get frightened now that again their winter fuel comes from the beast to the east, Germany thanks you America. I was there and saw that. There but for the grace of God Russia would rule all.
So also we all should thank you. The world, really should get over it and thank you. But that's just me, and the world snorts and anyway thinks because most of us Canucks live by the border and can see you-your Olympic Mountains are looking very fine today, blue clouds only lacing the tops - that we get way too chummy about you, defend you behind your back. How many Canadians to make up a British Cricket Team to take on ANY other outpost island of the old British Empire?
Nada. Can't be done. Fiji beats Canada at cricket, polo, anything of the old Empire. Meanwhile the Canucks are jogging, gardening, shovelling snow, or home watching hockey- how British Empire is that? or their version of that dreaded game they call football when your foot hardly touches the ball. Tsk. So, America, for all you have done right which is vast, thank you. You made that peninsula a park for eternity; we love visiting.
If the Chocolate Bomber airman could lift the souls of the children, and thereby all the people of Berlin with such a simple graceful loving gesture, the Soviet beast was powerless in this onslaught of good. They folded their tents after a horrible winter and had won no friends. Joe Stalin had taken the blinkers of all eyes: this was an Evil Empire. Chocolate Bombers will always beat the guys who cannot see because their guns get in the way. America is good and just and will come right soon again.
There is a latent Chocolate Bomber in every good soul in America, waiting to make the children smile. Fix their teeth, to, would be good. Chocolate must be tempered with caution. All right, grandpa, let it go at win win. Right. If we can do that, we can surely at least follow and honor his legacy. Which, really, is at the basis of the American antiques experience.
