Sonic the Hedgehog was created in 1991 he was created to replace the current mascot of Sega Games Alex Kidd. Sonic soon turned into a best selling video game all over the world and it opened up a rivalry with Mario from Super Mario Brothers from Nintendo Game Company. As of 2008, Sonic the Hedgehog Series has sold more than 50 million copies. Sonic has proved that they are here to stay.

Sonic was developed by a team of Sega designers, who did their jobs when they created Sonic. Children and adults alike recognize Sonic The Hedgehog. Sonic's popularity is due to the fact that he is blue, cute and has some pretty cool powers. He has appeared in many of his own Series of Games as well as some others appearances.

Not only has Sonic appeared in video games but in comic books and game books too. Some of the comic books were released only in Japans but there are a couple of comics that were released here in the United States and still are today. Check with your local comic book store.

He has even appeared in 2 books based on the Where's Waldo Series, the books were called Where's Sonic and Where's Sonic Now. There was a TV Series featuring Sonic as well. Sonic is an icon for both the computer world and in the media world as well. What is Sonic's appeal and what really makes him so popular?

The video games that first brought him into the public eye is the answer to the question. The video games he appears in is not just him saving Princesses or driving Go Karts but they are challenging for kids. In this first game, there are challenges he must do such as find the Chaos Emeralds, he must find these emeralds in different locations throughout the game and he must do so safely but maneuvering his way through the different locations.

There are Golden Rings that also appear in these games, these rings that the players posses can keep the game play still running, it is almost like a lifeline. These games are great for kids and they are age appropriate and so is the character. What could more fun a hedgehog or a plumber? You decide.

Along the way in the games you will encounter Sonic's friends such as Knuckles who has his own spin off game. These games have purpose; they actually teach your child problem solving skills. This is what makes Sonic a great icon. That is why everyone recognizes Sonic. There only may be a handful of kids or adults for that matter that have not heard of Sonic.

There are some Sonic games coming out for release soon. In December 2008 Sonic Unleashed is coming out and Sonic and the Black Knight will be coming in the months ahead. If you have already played all of the Sonic games you will really love playing Sonic Unleashed. But if you have never played before then you have some catching up to do. Once you play Sonic once you will never go back to playing another game again.
