It may seem unheard of to you, but there are about a million households all over the world that haven't managed or bothered to incorporate any footstools into their decor, whether it is in the living room or any other part of the house. Generally, we all tend to think of footstools as one of two things: either an expensive, ornate piece of furniture that belongs in the den or living room of an upscale couple or family, or as a big comfy piece of furniture that belongs at the end of dad's giant recliner. Depending on your initial reaction to the actual word, 'footstool', you are sure to have treated these furniture pieces in a different way to your neighbours or even other members of your family.

If, by chance, you are one of the giant populous who has not added even one little footstool to your entire home, then it is probably safe to say that you just don't understand how to incorporate them into your home. Why the confusion? Often, it is just a question of space. It doesn't seem feasible to many people to add a small square piece of furniture in the middle of the floor of what can be a very high traffic living space. Especially if you have small children, at the age when running around uncontrollably has overtaken your entire life! This is a fairly inopportune time to add somewhat child-dangerous furniture to your home, but the fact is that footstools can add a certain flair to most rooms of the house either aesthetically or purely for comfort.

If you think that footstools can only work in the living room or the den, think again! While it's entirely true that functionally, footstools do their best work in these rooms, they can also serve a purpose in some rather unorthodox spaces of your home as well. Depending on the architecture of your house, there are different ways to display footstools in a classy way. At the end of an upstairs hallway in front of a bright or curtained window, perhaps; adding a small armchair and an appropriately sized footstool gives the illusion of space when in fact there may be very little. If you are in a position to celebrate space, however, the same set-up in a large bedroom or guest room could make the entire space much more homey, comfortable and relaxing.

Footstools are often a very underrated piece of furniture, but you should remember that they can serve a higher purpose than just to hold a pair of size 12 feet up and away from an old comfy armchair. Experiment, and see what kind of flair you can add to your home!
