After traumatic experiences, the skin can often leave scars behind long after the initial wound has healed. Scars can occur after various types of trauma and one common form of trauma and scarring is acne. After years of having acne, with repeat infection and then healing, skin can leaves scars behind. Fortunately, there are options which allow the skin to become beautiful and clear again.

For many who have suffered from acne, acne scarring can be a very challenging skin problem. There are many options available through modern medical technology, some related to creams, gels, and some use lasers, dermabrasion, excision of the scar, and many more. Depending on the skin type and the scars that are located on the face or other areas, a dermatologist will make some scar removal recommendation. It also helps if the patient has done some research and is more aware of their options prior to treatment. This gives them more information and knowledge in the area of scar removal so that they can discuss their options more fully with the dermatologist.

Scar removal is a risky endeavor due to the fact that the epidermis layer of skin must be removed to reach the deeper layer, the dermis. Scars are considered to be a mark which actually affect the skin through more than one layer and which are no longer dark in color. Spots or marks that are dark color are generally just brown spots associated with the healing process related to acne. These spots can usually be removed quite easily with creams and gels which have ingredients that promote cell turnover and the generation of new skin. Scars do not respond to some of these treatments and may need to be removed through the abrasion of the skin. Abrasion requires that layers of skin be removed so that newer skin can grow in its place, causing the removal of any scars. Some scars cannot be removed depending on how deep they are.

For acne scarring that runs deeper, excision may be necessary, which takes cone shaped excision from the skin, removing a deeper scar which may look like a hole or pocket in the skin. It is important to remain realistic as not every scar can be successfully removed. To discuss which treatment option is right for you, find a dermatologist in your area and explore your options. Every skin type and situation is different. Knowing what options are available to you make it easier to go over which procedures may suit you better.

For some acne scarring removal techniques, the removal of scars can be performed with use of creams or gels that contain glycolic acid, hydroquinone, and vitamin A. When using such treatments, and any sort of scar removal technique, avoiding direct and prolonged exposure to sunlight is required for optimum results and skin health. Chemical peels are another option. Peels help acne scarring by promoting the shedding of skin which helps to even out marks, indentations in the skin, and any bumps related to scarring.
